Last night was a Burleseque and music extravaganza at the Cherry Lounge in Hoylake. There was a really great atmosphere in the venue with great fifties tunes performed by Fast Eddie And The Jive Machine and a series of Burlesque performances including Millie Dollar. I first photographed her over two years ago in a very cold Olympia so it was great to see her do her act properly and what a performance she did.

Three songs and out was the order in a packed Masque last night. It was all a bit of a blur but the band sounded great and I was rather pleased that they performed one of my current faves, ‘I Am Not A Robot’, as soon as I got out of the photo pit (I packed up verrrrrrrrrry slowly whilst it was on). Marina had a great big fan on her which blew her hair about rather randomly…Medusa may be a more appropriate name for her.

Liverpool Sound City

The last four days have been a wonderful music fest in Liverpool with loads of bands and conferences going on. Pretty much all of the city centre seemed to be humming with live music and it was great to see and hear it. I did a couple of nights worth so here’s my selection of Ian Prowse (going all Bruce Sprinsteen), The Mohawk Lodge, The Owls and Little Secrets. The Little Secrets

A pleasant, if slightly windy, afternoon spent photographing the band The Little Secrets. I first took pics of them last December (at what was, I found out today, their first gig) and was impressed by their songs. I’ve known Kev though (the second chap in the picture) for many a year as a drummer and now guitarist so good to catch up with him again. Also featured is their lead singer, Stacy.

The Last Gambados

I first came across The Last Gambados when they did a set at Parr St Studios and loved the sixties feel of the group. Phil on lead vocals and keys makes for a great subject too. This was from a set they did at the fine bohemianesque Cafe Tabac in Bold St, even if it was rather cramped for the five guys plus sound engineer in the corner. I’ve been doing photos at LIPA with their final year music student performances for four nights this week. Really enjoyed seeing and hearing all the great bands and music being made. Loads of pics to go through but one of the big stand outs was Williams McGee on Friday night. He started off doing some acoustic guitar and piano tunes (including one where he made the lyrics up on the spot). His band came out and we got treated to some awesome blues. I first came across Monika at a gig in Parr St Studios last month when she did a short acoustic set on piano and she impressed with the quality of her songs. It was lovely to be invited to her showcase event at LIPA tonight where she put on a great performance with a 13 piece band. A nice mix of funky soul tunes and some gorgeous piano ballads. Rachael Wright

I first came across Rachael a year ago when she played an acoustic based gig at The Zanzibar. Really loved her songs and performance so it was great to see her again at LIPA with a more expanded band. Rachael has recently added the electric guitar to her sound and it really added extra dynamism to the set.
